Recounting the journey of salmon, Komagata is using different colours and textures of blue paper to illustrate the story. There are surprises waiting behind the next page and additional shapes are delicately cut into the paper, making the scenes three-dimensional.

Information on Katsumi Komagata

The award-winning Japanese graphic designer Katsumi Komagata creates very special books, using texture, colours, cut-out shapes and windows to draw the reader into a three-dimensional paper world. Each page reveals a new surprise. Katsumi’s colourful, playful and meticulously crafted books are inspired by the colours of nature and his own experiences, appealing to children and adults alike. In total he has created over 25 different titles, amongst them recently 2 tactile books for blind people.

With his books Katsumi won the Price for Creativity in Paris and the Special Award for New Art at the Bologna International Children's Books Fair in 2000.

Katsumi’s special interest is encouraging creativity in children and communication between parent and child. He regularly holds exhibitions, talks and workshops for children in many countries, particularly Japan and France. Katsumi Komagata’s books have only recently been introduced to the UK, but have already found their way into museum and library collections
