I usually show the small accordion “Book” of self portraits standing, opened out like a screen so the drawings can be seen to bend over the edge of one page onto the next.

The figures are still but they are spaced so that they seem to shift from one gesture into the next. The action doesn’t stop between the images: it stops in the images themselves, in the intent looking of the figure as she draws.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

For several years my practice has involved creating extended photographic sequences. I have presented each of these in the form of a unique or limited edition hand built book. I have always drawn as well, and have recently been able to make two books of drawings in larger editions. Both of these, each in a different way, are also made of images formed into sequences.

Perhaps “Book” is the most direct way for me to say what I try to do. Its subject, the subject of much of my work, is process. “Book” quite literally shows that for me making art is not about making one good drawing. It is about observation. About thinking and looking from one angle then another over and over again.
