Artist’s Statement

I was born in Ukraine and now live with my husband in England.

I have always been attracted to books, hand-making my first at the age of 13, when I had yet to realize that this particular art would become my passion. At this age, I did not appreciate that the art of bookbinding and book design had developed over thousands of years. At 13, I was still a few years away from meeting the people who would later develop my passion and train me in this form of art.

Each book that I make is unique. Every book has an awe of great design and creation, starting life as a mere spontaneous idea. All handmade objects touch me; they have soul! In turn, I devote my soul to the creation of each book and, as an end result, it shines, eludes the warmth from my hands and heart.

I believe that computers will never replace real books; that a machine will never replace a man; that nothing will replace face to face conversation. I prefer to look into a person’s shining eyes, feel their smile, their soul, sadness, passion and sincerity. After all, eyes never lie and eyes never change with age; they are the gates to each person’s eternal soul. I also love clouds; also eternal with no beginning, no end. I am a revolutionist who seeks to break the rules, full of ideas and projects…..

And it is all of these things which are reflected in my books.
