Projects 2010

I am researching art history via the National Extension College which is proving to be very interesting and inspiring. I am also researching the work of Edward Hopper and Giorgio de Chirico in terms of artists who work within the city and its surreal environs. I am looking for a studio in north London for a new months so that I can start doing some largescale drawings and collages.

Here in London, I teach Web Design and Business English. I am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience of teaching in London colleges, schools and community centres from art and design to photography and computing. I keep my skills updated and recently completed an advanced Photoshop Course and will be doing more studies in photography and e-commerce this autumn (2010).

I promote various online projects via my website portal www.zyarts.com - see below. As well as promoting artists books on my website Zybooks artists books online

I have worked in and studied many art and design practices from designing interiors for hotels in Crete, to creating projects for art magazines in London and promoting projects on the internet.

Art and Photography Practice

Documents: I create series of images from research. My most recent project is entitled: The Lost Suitcase of Walter Benjamin, which is inspired by my research into the last days of the famous German writer and cultural commentator when he attempted to flee through France on his way to New York, only to end up in a small village near the border where he committed suicide. It is purported that he carried a suitcase or briefcase with him which contained a manuscript and various items.

Photo-constructions: I have created 3 series of constructed images based around stage sets. The Dream: based on a poem by Jorge Luis Borges. Imaginary Cities based on research into photography history and Daybreak again based on a poem by Borges. These works pay homage to artists and photographers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Andre Kertesz, Eugene Atget, Giorgio de Chirico.

Artists Books: I have created a number of artists’ books which come out of my photography research and art projects. I am currently creating a number of online photobooks based on my travels around the city and working with different media.

The Archway Series: I pass by here every day. A series of images and two artists books. The photographs are digital and medium format in colour and black and white based on my research into the area where I live.

The Kings Cross Document: Research into the industrial archaeology of the Kings Cross area which has many Victorian features that are rapidly disappearing due to the expansion of the rail network in this area.

Current Online Projects

Cafes around the world art/mail art project (www.zyarts.com/cafesaroundtheworld) This project invites contributions from people around the world to send in an image, drawing, postcard of their favourite cafe or of their town where the favourite is situated. what it is like? why do you go there? is it famous? This project comes out of my research into the architecture of the café buildings in my local area, which incorporate a variety of styles from early to late Victorian to art deco, Edwardian, Georgian and Brutalist.

the Picasso electronic book :I decided to create the Picasso electronic book in 2001 to celebrate Picasso's 120th birthday in that year and I sent out a call for contributions, images and text works had to be inspired by Picasso in some way. This project continues online thanks to further promotion by rhizome.org - the New York based multi-media project : (www.zyarts.com/ebook)

The House of Memories. This project invites people to send in images and text works on the theme of memories - of people, places, stories, childhood, etc. Media: photographs, collages, works on paper, 3D objects, envelopes, paintings, prints. This project was inspired by my photo album of my family and relatives who are no longer here but I have some of their precious objects in my possession. (www.zyarts.com/houseofmemories)

from my house/to yours: the journeyweb. I set up this project when we moved home and I was feeling very homesick. I missed the familiar faces, the taxi covered in plastic flowers at the end of my road, the mix of people. I wanted to find out 'what makes you feel at home?'
